PILOT (Preparing Influential Leaders of Tomorrow)

An old Jewish prayer offered on behalf of a Rabbi’s apprentice asks, “May the dust of your Rabbi cover you.”  The meaning suggested an apprentice follow so closely, as to be covered in dust stirred by his Rabbi’s sandals.  As Christ’s disciples, we desire to be covered by the dust of our Rabbi… Jesus.  God in turn calls us to make disciples.  How many eyes are on us can determine the magnitude of our impact.

Those of us who are fathers pray our children watch us, and pray harder God will shape the vision of what they see.  With all our imperfections we are still thankful to be models.  So many young men are without a Godly man to watch.  How difficult for a young man to look at the world and learn what it is to be a man.

Whether you personally are a sports fan, there is no denying our culture is sports crazy.  Discipling an athlete who will in turn affect those older, younger and in their peer group – male and female – makes for an exponential impact.  Our walk with God takes on even greater significance as we choose to share it.

Being a PILOT requires:

  • Putting your Christian walk on display for a young man to watch.  A model of perfection?  No.  A commitment to Christ by a real man?  YES.
  • Communicating with your disciple’s pastoral sponsor and parent.
  • Meeting with your “disciple,” once each month if possible.
    • Praying for them
    • Listening to them
    • Helping them safely evaluate their performance as leaders
    • Helping them objectively assess their program accountability
    • Encouraging them in their new leadership applications
    • Sharing how and where God is working in your life
    • Loving them unconditionally
  • Attend mentoring session at the annual summer leadership camp.
  • Enjoying the blessing seeing a changed life provides.
